Oral Cancer - Symptoms, Causes & Treatment
Cancer arising from the mouth is called oral cancer. These include cancers of the lips, tongue, floor of the mouth and hard and soft palate. Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers seen in India. It is caused mainly by tobacco consumption either in the form of: Smoke – Cigarettes, beedis Spirits – Alcohol consumption Spices – Chewing tobacco or smokeless tobacco like paan, Gutka and khat Sharp tooth – irritation Oral cancers usually present as abnormal growth or ulcer in the mouth. The diagnosis is made by doing a biopsy of the growth or ulcer. If cancer is confirmed on the biopsy, then usually scans such as CT scans, MRI scans, or PET CT scans are done to assess the extent and spread of cancer.
